Medications can be classified in various ways, such as by chemical properties, mode or route of administration, biological system affected, or therapeutic effects.
First Databank™(FDB) Therapeutic Classification provides a means of classifying drugs and drug products for formulary maintenance and reporting. This classification system is designed with an unlimited depth of classification using parent-to-child relationship hierarchy.
Anatomical Therapeutic Classification
Drug-specific clinical data such as Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification codes published by the World Health Organisation are also included. This system classifies active substances into different groups according to the organi or system on which they act and their therapeutic, pharmacological and chemical properties.
ATC codes are provided within Middle East Drug Knowledge and used across many healthcare settings such as:
- Carrying out Drug Utilisation Reviews
- Calculating the drug spend by therapy
- Searching for drugs by their therapeutic class, and their alternatives.
